Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the Romanian Psychoneuroendocrine Society we are pleased to welcome you to Bucharest for the 6th Romanian Congress of Neuroendocrinology from 10 to 13 October 2018.

The meeting is organized under the patronage of the department for medical sciences of the Romanian Academy. The Academy of Medical Sciences of Romania, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Carol Davila” and the National Institute of Endocrinology “C.I.Parhon” are co–organizing institutions. The sixth national congress enjoys, as did the first one, in 1996, an important international participation.

Starting with 1996, every 4 years we had a wonderful neuroendocrine meeting bringing together specialists from Endocrinology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry and Psychology, basic scientists and clinicians, during the season of golden Romanian autumn, in the centennial year.

The first edition started in the Romexpo conference centre, very close to this place, with an important international participation. Then in 2000, the second Congress of Neuroendocrinology was held in Curtea de Arges, an important place for the Romanian history. In 2004,  the 3rd congress was held in Poiana Brasov, with excellent memories and projects that continued over time. In 2009, the fourth Congress was held in the Patriarchal Palace in Bucharest, again with a broad national and international participation. The last congress was hosted by the new location of the National Library in 2014.

Neuroendocrinology has a special prestige in Romania. In our national public health programs, in a country with endemic goiter, the concern for iodine deficiency syndromes and congenital hypothyroidism is mandatory, but we also deal with endocrine and neuroendocrine tumors, cases receiving free medication, based on neurohormones derivatives. In the National Institute of Endocrinology "C.I Parhon" works the research laboratory of molecular, cellular and structural endocrinology, there are numerous clinical and research studies.

The forefathers have set the cornerstone in this area. Grigore T. Popa discovered the pituitary-vascular portal system, the pathway between the brain and the pituitary gland, whose role Geoffrey Harris elucidated afterwards, and Nicolae Paulescu developed the technique of hypophysectomy, which Harvey Cushing immediately took over in neurosurgical practice of human pathology. In the contemporary age, Gheorghe Benga discovered the water channels essential to the action of vasopressin.

Bucharest has a long multicultural history, influenced by many scientific and cultural personalities. We are deeply convinced that you will have an opportunity to discover the true beauty and friendly atmosphere of our city.

We await all scientists and clinicians interested and practicing in neuroendocrinology. The Program Organizing Committee prepared balanced program covering basic reports, translational studies and clinical practice. Plenary lectures, symposia, meet-the-professor, round table discussion, oral communications and poster sessions are planned. You will find a choice of interesting topics and you will have an opportunity to present your recent achievements and reports in neuroendocrinology.

Please accept our warmest invitation to Bucharest.
